I read this story on harpersbazaar.com today about performance artist Marina Abramović (she's dope) and her newly purchased house she shares with her close friend Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci. Wanted to share a few bits:

She occupies the lower three floors, which open onto a Japanese rock garden and a lap pool, while he has the top two floors.

Abramović's aesthetic definitely tends toward the minimal, especially in her house, which is sparely decorated and stripped of ornamentation. "I never hang anything on the walls. There is never any art because I'm making art. I don't want to see it because then I'll never have a new idea. I try to start from the whiteness and manifest something after that." And with every new house, she sells the contents of the last one.

"I hate kitchens".

I drive by this spot all the time and when the facade was completed, I just couldn't believe how quickly it was done. One day it's a Hostel, the next a Boutique Hotel. That PALIGROUP works FAST!

This post was inspired by another movie I watched the other night, “L’Amour Fou,” a documentary about Yves Saint Laurent, the French couturier, narrated by Pierre Bergé, his partner in business and in life. You see, I haven't really seen many movies since my son was born 3 1/2 years ago and we JUST got Netflix over the holidays, so you could say I'm catching up on MY viewing pleasure.

I LOVED this movie. It was full of amazing imagery; Yves Clothing of course, hanging with Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger & the likes from the 60s and 70s, the incredible collection of objects d′art which in 2009 sold at Christies for $484 Million, and the fabulous homes that Yves and Pierre owned. I'm totally fascinated by the ones they owned Morocco, 3 in total. Dar es Saada and *The Villa Oasis were both decorated by Bill Willis and Jacques Grange designed Villa Mabrouka. *Both designers collaborated on Villa Oasis.

The Other Glass House

I thought I would stay on the subject of movies and post a few pics of the glass house located outside Stockholm, Sweden and featured in the movie The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo. I did get to see this movie over the holidays and thought it was pretty good as well.

According to Curbed.com the director declined "to include the swimming pool out front, and fog obscures the view in a few scenes. The house had been lingering on the market for the indie-film budget of $5.62M for a while, but very well may have sold since the movie was released-the listing was pulled from the Southeby's Stockholm website just last night".

Vidal Sassoon : : Neutra's Singleton House

This weekend I was able to watch Vidal Sassoon the Movie and really enjoyed it. The movie explores the life and legacy of the most influential hairdresser in the world, whose influence far outreaches the industry he changed forever.

“My whole work, beginning in the late 1950s, came from the Bauhaus,” Sassoon explains in Architectural Digest. “It was all about studying the bone structure of the face, to bring out the character. Architects have always been my heroes,” he adds.

After hearing how architecture influenced his work as a hairdresser it seems only natural that he would of course live in an architectural gem of a home (one of my favorites). In the movie there are glimpses of the famous 1959 Richard Neutra's Singleton House that he and his wife renovated after purchasing it in 2004. Last year Architectural Digest featured the Bel Air home in its April issue with the pictures shown above.

God, I can smell the Almond scented Shampoo and Conditioner that I used in the 80s so clearly right now.

HELLO 2012

It might be 2012, but I'm feelin' the 80s today. Probably something to do with my 3 1/2 year old wanting to show me his break dancing moves (the Robot included) and listening to Van Halen II, Malcolm McLaren and Sonic Youth. I posted a cover of Wet Magazine on my Tumblr last year after finding a few issues for sale on Alan Rosenbergs Books. They're too good not to post more.

WET was an avant-garde Los Angeles - based magazine that revolved around the idea of"gourmet bathing" and later evolved to "gourmet bathing andbeyond." Its publisher andcreator was Leonard Koren,an architecture school graduate. The magazine covered cultural issues and wasknown for its innovative use of graphic art...

Over theyears, Wet began to reflect a broader expanse ofstories, capturing a kind of smart, artsy Los Angeles attitude that wasemerging at the same time as punk, but had its own distinct aesthetic.

I was at a gallery in Silver Lake about a week ago for a friend's art show. I happened into a side room and on the walls hung the most amazing photographs of skulls and bones. One photo had stacked bones arranged in incredible layouts inside a tomb, another was a skeleton adored in jewels and one showed shelves of painted skulls. When I inquired about them, the curator showed me this book "The Empire of Death: A Cultural History of Ossuaries and Charnel Houses" from which the photos were from.

The cover of the book was in itself so fascinating to me and I had never heard of an Ossuary. I had to find out more. So I took a flyer home and looked it up online.

The book by Professor Paul Koudounaris is a photographic journey and the written history of the religious movements from his visits to seventy Ossuaries and Charnel Houses over 4 continents.

Taken from his Empire de la Mort site Paul writes: "this is not a book about the macabre or death. It is a book about beauty and salvation. If you understand that when looking at these photos, then I hope you will chose to read the book."

I'm digging Hundun; a new wallpaper from one of my favorite lines, Trove. I'm not usually drawn to florals, but there is something about the blurred lotus blossom and the speckles of color in this print that I find very intriguing in a otherworldly kinda way. It's beautiful.

A Visit to Art Luna

Yesterday I made my twice annual visit to Art Luna Salon in Santa Monica. It is Art that I trust with my unruly tresses. Not only is Art and architect of hair, he is an architect of landscapes as well and his salon brings new meaning to "Mixed Use" space.

The quaint, little beach house on Main Street not only serves as his well-known hair and beauty salon, but the bungalow in back is his studio for "Art Luna Garden" his Landscape Design company with a lush botanical paradise with chirping caged birds set in between the two buildings.

But wait! that's not all. It's also a nursery, selling potted plants, succulents and his own line of tree lighting. And inside the salon he sells the most amazing selection of Design Books from the world of Fashion, Interiors & Art, Jewelry with a bohemian handmade vibe, Fragrances, and uniquely curated finds from his travels abroad.

Yes, I did just say that. I know, its a dorky reference to Horshack from Welcome Back, Kotter, but that's how I feel after checking out Dering Hall. It is "an online marketplace for the finest interior designers, architects, artisans, and design dealers to showcase their work and sell new, high-end home furnishings and accessories." This isn't IKEA people. This is some high-end, bespoke home furnishings and accessories.

I encourage you to read a REALLY interesting interview posted on Arrested Motion. In the article he reveals how he views his work: "as a form of self portrait or at least the portrait of what its’ like to look inside my head....and the story behind each piece seem to have "aspects that deal with the process of intense psychotherapy and the years of dealing with dissociative identity disorder (a form of multiple personalities) and trauma I went through in childhood."

Hôtel Americano

Oh, a new spot to check out in NYC!

Located in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, Hôtel Americano is the first US hotel from Mexico City design hotel chain - Grupo Habita. The mesh clad building was designed by Mexican architect Enrique Norten of Ten Arqitectos and the restrained interiors that nod to mid-century with a Japanese touch were designed by MCH-Arnaud Montigny.

As with the other properties from Gropo Habita, I'm sure Hôtel Americano will not disappoint.

I picked this one up and a few other issues in MINT condition at the Long Beach Antique Market yesterday. They are not dated, but I think this one is from 1957 and the others around the same. It's so CLASSIC. With photos from Julius Shulman, Interiors by Paul Laszlo (both commercial and residential) Trousdale Estate homes by Paul Williams and the newly built and designed interior offices of the Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood. Such a find!

WOW! It's a crazy time for ART and Design. So many things to see. I've been partying like it's 1980. I've made it to a few events, but so many more to go; all part of Pacific Standard Time which is an unprecedented collaboration of cultural institutions across Southern California coming together to celebrate the birth of the L.A. art scene. Beginning October 2011, over 60 cultural institutions will make their contributions to this region-wide initiative encompassing every major L.A. art movement from 1945 to 1980.

Friday night I went to check out Under the Big Black Sun at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA and listen to Henry Rollins spin for MOCA members only party. The show featured over 130 artists and their work from 1974-81 with topics of race, gender, sexuality, presidential history, international relations, (sub)urban blight, war, spirituality, American life, punk culture, media and Hollywood commentaries, and political activism.

Be warned: this show will take a few trips to get thru. Its large and intense. The show is up till February, so that's enough time for a few visits.

Saturday night we hit up the opening reception Royal/T presents East Village West, curated by Ann Magnuson and Kenny Scharf: An infamous walk on the wild side to celebrate California's Pop Culture and Hollywood's influence on NYC's Neo-Dada art movement. It explored how California pop culture and Hollywood influenced underground club culture and art scenes in the late '70s and early '80s.

With art by Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf and many more, this show was a lot of fun and saw so many old friends. Even my 3 year old had a blast. You have until January to check it out.

Just as soon as I can, I'm heading out to see this in person: From fellow blogger David John, his interpretation of Richard Dorso's Life Long Collection at Los Angeles Modern Auctions (LAMA); part of Pacific Standard Time - Collecting in Los Angeles- 1945 – 1980.

David John of the acclaimed arts and interiors blog YHBHS will design and style a temporary interior space, the first of its kind, at the LAMA showroom that will showcase a fresh and current perspective of Dorso’ s lifelong collection. Utilizing David John’s skills as an interior designer, LAMA has invited this local California designer to create an intimate space that brings together the past and present, shining a light on how Modern Art and Design is viewed in today’s current art and interiors scene.

Incredible images from Antwerp-based photographer Jan Kempenaers documenting abandoned monuments in the Balkans (former Yugoslavia).

‘During the 1960s and 70s, thousands of monuments commemorating the Second World War – called ‘Spomeniks’ – were built throughout the former Yugoslavia; striking monumental sculptures, with an angular geometry echoing the shapes of flowers, crystals, and macro-views of viruses or DNA. In the 1980s the Spomeniks still attracted millions of visitors from the Eastern bloc; today they are largely neglected and unknown, their symbolism lost and unwanted.

The 25 year anniversay of the Chinati Foundation coming up this October 7th-9th and would be a perfect time to go see Donald Judd's 100 works in Mill Aluminum and 15 works in Concrete set amoung this 340 acre compound. Other artist works to be seen there include Dan Flavin, Ronnie Horn and Carl Andre among many others.

A – California minute

The predominant focus of this show is lyrics from songs about California from the 1960’s and early 1970’s. For the last five years, a significant part of Jow’s work has focused on text and word play with a special emphasis on signs and symbols. More known for her witty and irreverent drawings on vintage letterhead paper, this show marks a departure from that body of work and focuses more on the artist’s love for language in its purest visual form.

For A California Minute, Jow explores the complexity of California’s allure and fantasies about the Golden State’s promise through the simple dots and dashes that articulate Morse code. Extending out of her earlier work with Braille, Jow became interested in Morsecode, not only for its capacity to communicate language and its romantic sense of nostalgia, but also because its graphic qualities are reminiscent of work by minimalist artists of the same period.

Photographer Iain McKell offers an extraordinary and breathtakingly beautiful glimpse into the lives of a real and raw group of present-day nomads whose culture is built around ideals of freedom, nature, and simplicity. Historically despised the new Gypsies are there by choice, not heritage. Unrelated to the Roma, the movement began in 1986 when a group of Post-Punk Anti-Thatcher protesters headed out of London into the English countryside. McKell followed these New Age Travellers to the West Country and over the years he watched them become a hybrid tribe - the new gypsies - present-day rural anarchists, living the subversive lifestyle in elaborately decorated horse-drawn caravans. Known as 'Horse-drawn', the new gypsies share a desire for sustainability, a love of self-reliance and a disdain for the trappings of contemporary life. For more than a decade McKell has focused his lens on travellers of all ages: parents, children, couples and loners. With sensitivity and honesty he captures a way of life that seems at once romantic, strange, beautiful and simple. The result is a deeply insightful portrayal of a culture that eschews the traditional creature comforts of urban life in favour of the simplicity and freedom of the natural world.

Earlier this year we stayed at Caitlin's Agave House in Ojai. While there, I had a chance to use Persephenie's Nanu Lei Fizzy Mineral Bath Powder and was intrigued not only by the gorgeous scent, but also by its Old World black & white packaging. Her Body Care products use wild-crafted, organic and certified organic essential oils and absolutes, distilled directly from flowers and plants such as neroli blossom, jasmine, camellia, linden blossom and more.

I got a chance to meet with Persephenie at her studio here in Los Angeles where she handcrafts her scents and found out about the other things that keep her busy including her fabulous line of jewelry.

D*BP: Tell us about what you do?

P: I'm a perfumer specializing in botanticals and custom perfume. I'm also an Aromatherapist. I formulate body care, make jewelry, and during those rare free periods, I love to paint. I think of myself as a closet painter who earns a living in the world of aromatics.

I'm also mama to a beautiful nine year old and house full of animals.

D*BP: Where is your studio and how long have you had it?

P: My studio is on Edinburgh Avenue, a side street off West Third, one block West of The Grove.
I've been in my space for seven years this summer. My original intention for the studio was to make art and teach art to children. With love and enthusiasm for botanicals and scent, it quickly evolved into an aromatics studio..

I teach botanical perfumery privately and to groups. This year I took a step back from open classes to focus on my body care, perfumes, and jewelry.

D*BP: I really LOVE your jewelry. What kind of materials do you use?

Thank you! Recycled 14 and 18 kt gold, sterling, leather, fossilized tusk, feathers, macrame', semi-precious and precious gems, rose beads that I hand roll, and anything that is beautiful to incorporate.

D*BP: What inspires you?

P: Almost everything, especially my son.

D*BP: What’s your philosophy?

P: Taking care of myself by loving the people and creatures close to my heart, working hard, surrounding myself with beauty, and having fun.
